Axioms on gravity and levity
Gravity and levity are equal powers when the quantities are equal and lie near one another, and no element is heavy or light in its own natural place. The text derives them from one element being drawn into another, and states that nature works its effect by the shortest way.
Measuring reflected sunlight with a mirror at a b
a b is the aperture through which the sun passes; if the thickness of the rays could be measured at n m one could draw the true lines of their concourse. Instead one measures them within the aperture at c d, places the mirror at distance a b, and lets rays d b and c a rebound at equal angles.
Weight descends to the world's centre by the shortest path
The note asks why a weight does not stay in place, answering that it has no resistance and so moves toward the centre. Having no resistance it descends by the shortest way, and the lowest place is the centre of the world, which it finds directly rather than wandering along diverse lines.
Drums tuned by tensioning their skins
As one drum makes low and high voices according to how tightly its skin is stretched, so several skins variously tensioned over one drum body yield varied voices. A square drum's skin is tightened and slackened with the lever a b, and other drawings show a drum of notches rubbed by spring-wheels.
Spheres of the lightest elements
The lightest elements take a spherical figure, with nothing lower than the centre and nothing higher than the point most remote from it. Every spherical body has infinite diameters, and only a line from centre to circumference is perpendicular and straight.
