How objects set obliquely in a river dam up its current
With numerical calculations and an interlaced knot device on the facing leaf
On folio 230v Leonardo sets out a series of propositions on how objects of various thicknesses, placed transversally and at differing obliquities in a uniform river current, back up (ringorgare) more or less water depending on how nearly their slope matches the direction of the flow. A related note explains that the air replacing water poured from a vessel enters by the shortest route to the water's surface. The facing folio 225r carries no transcribed text but bears columns of numerical calculations, an interlaced knot device with a central flaming stem, and a small feathery head sketch.

Obliquely placed objects and the backing-up of a current
Of objects of equal thickness set across a river at various inclinations to the bank, the one lying more obliquely dams up more water. The part of an object that rises above the flow is most struck by the rebound of the water where its slope most nearly matches that of the current.
Columns of numerical calculations
The facing leaf carries several columns of figures and worked calculations, with fractions and totals set out in Leonardo's hand. No accompanying prose was transcribed for this side. The numbers are faded and partly illegible.
Interlaced knot device
A looped, figure-of-eight interlace with a central vertical stem topped by flame-like forms is drawn on the right-hand leaf. It reads as one of Leonardo's decorative knot designs rather than a mechanism. It is untranscribed and carries no caption in the bundle.
