The 'ventilating' (oscillating) motion and how it dies away

A physics sheet, seen here in transmitted light, defining what Leonardo calls the 'ventilating' or oscillating motion. He describes it as a flexible motion that arises in bodies unable to follow their impetus in one direction, so that they swing this way and that, turning reflected motion into incident and back again, until the impetus dies away together with the body's motion. He lists where it appears (a weight hung from cords, the arms of a balance, a boat on water, water in vessels, wind rebounding between walls, fire in a furnace, the sea and river mouths) and distinguishes a straight kind, swinging between two directions, from a revolvable kind demonstrated by a wheel that falls and unwinds a wound cord, then re-winds and climbs again.

Oscillating motion that consumes itself with its impetus
The ventilating motion is a flexible motion generated in bodies constrained not to be able to follow the impetus joined to them in the direction in which it was created; so it moves now this way, now that, converting reflected motion into incident and incident into reflected, until the impetus that drives the body consumes itself and dies with the body's motion.
Where oscillation is seen: pendulum, balance, boat, water, wind, fire
Though it always springs from impetus, the ventilating motion appears in many forms: a heavy body suspended from cords, the arms of a balance about its pole, a boat on the water, water within its vessels, wind rebounding between walls, fire in a furnace, and the sea and the mouths of rivers. It is of two natures, straight (swinging between only two directions, as north-south or east-west) and revolvable.
The falling wheel that unwinds and re-winds its cord
The revolvable motion is shown by a cord wound about a mounted wheel, one end fixed at a height, the other to the wheel: let the wheel fall along a perpendicular and it unwinds the cord entirely; then, by the impetus gained, it re-winds and mounts back up near where it parted, continuing until its impetus is spent.
