The book opens on water that, striking at various angles, hollows out beneath river banks. Walls ruined by the water always fall toward the oncoming flood, the bank's own bulges impeding the straight course of the flow.
Why water stands high at the middle and sides of a channel
Striking the bank, water leaps up, reflects down to the bottom and back up, and meets the opposing flow in the middle, which rebounds and returns to strike the bank again; so its surface stands highest in the middle and at the sides. Strong currents also drive eddies that drill and wear the bed.
Mountain stone converted to tufa over clay
Many mountains are built of stones that do not reach their roots; following the order of the strata they are turned to tufa, and under the tufa is clay. This is seen along all rivers that issue from great cuts in the mountains onto the plains, cut down to their roots.
