A classification of motion and percussion in heavy bodies (ff. 90v-82r)
Violent, transverse and natural motions; incident and reflected motion; simple and doubled blows
A densely written transmitted-light spread that systematically classifies the motion and percussion of heavy bodies. On 90v Leonardo names three principal motions (violent, transverse, natural), distinguishes incident from reflected motion, defines percussion as the end of one and the start of the other, and separates the direct, equidistant and oblique lines a body may travel. On 82r he divides motion into simple and compound (with direct- and lateral-rotating variants), lists the ways a mover drives a body, and distinguishes simple from compound and doubled blows, using the sculptor striking a chisel into marble and a hammer's double bounce as examples. He closes that a rebound from above downward is more powerful than one from below upward.

Three principal motions and two mixed motions
Heavy bodies have three principal motions: violent, transverse and natural, plus two mixed ones (violent-transverse and transverse-natural). Transverse motion falls away from the mover and itself divides into natural and violent.
Incident motion, reflected motion, and percussion
Incident motion separates the body from its mover and carries it to the site of percussion; reflected motion divides the body from that percussion and raises it to its greatest height. Percussion is the impediment of motion, the end of incident and the beginning of reflected motion.
Augmentative and diminutive qualities of motion
A motion is augmentative when a heavy body moves toward the center of the world, gaining heaviness and speed at every degree of descent; it is diminutive when the body recedes from that center, gaining lightness and slowness at every part of its motion.
Direct, equidistant and oblique lines of travel
The lines a heavy body can traverse are of three kinds: the direct line reaching to the center of the world, the equidistant line whose ends stay equally far from that center, and the oblique line lying between them. Oblique lines are infinite, varying only in greater or lesser obliquity.
Simple versus compound (rotating) motion
Simple motion never draws the body's axis out of its first state; compound motion adds a rotation of the body about itself. This rotation is either direct-rotating, with the upper part turning toward the object, or lateral-rotating, turning about the central line of the motion.
Simple, compound and doubled blows
A simple percussion is that of a body on its object; a compound one passes into the support beneath it, like the blow on a sculptor's chisel passing into the marble. The doubled blow is when a hammer bounces from an upper blow and falls to make a lower one, weakening as more objects are interposed, like beating the first leaves of a book.
