Concave mirrors: convergence of reflected rays
Where reflected rays meet, and how to see the sun's reboundings separated

Leonardo argues that the meeting-point of reflected rays lies within a quarter of the sphere's diameter, and that greater concavity scatters the rays and yields less heat. He also gives a practical recipe for coating a half-ring mirror with white-lead-and-egg so the separated rays can be seen on a plane, and describes a masked mirror pierced by a tiny aperture that shows the sun in all its reboundings.

Reflected rays meet within a quarter of the sphere's diameter
Leonardo states that the concourse of reflected rays does not pass the fourth part of the diameter of the spheres from which concave mirrors take their curvature, demonstrated along the line a o. This places the focal meeting of the rays close to the mirror's surface.
Coating a half-ring mirror to reveal the separated rays
To see the rays separated, take a mirror shaped as a half-ring, flat inside, and coat it two or three times with white lead tempered with egg. When dry, scratch it bare with a wooden stylus so as not to scratch the mirror, and thus the rays appear separated upon the plane a b c, as their causes are separated.

If the half-ring mirror, flat and polished within, is wholly closed by the wall c d save for a tiny aperture at d, the sun is seen mirrored in all its reboundings, marked at c, e, f, g, h, i, K, L, n, while the rest of the mirror stays dark.
Greater concavity scatters the rays and lessens the heat
Among concave mirrors of equal diameter, the more concave one meets its reflected rays more disunited and with less heat. The ray b o striking at point o bounces through eight places (o, e, f, g, h, i, K, l, n) and never crosses the central cathetus m h, so the part n c e d o is of little worth; only the segment i g is less bad.
