Impetus and percussion: motion between equal angles
How a struck body gains height from the blow and distance from the impetus
The written page (83v, at left) carries small lettered diagrams of a rebounding trajectory over a curved base and a text on the mechanics of impact; the facing 89r is nearly blank, with only a faint arc bleeding through. Leonardo distinguishes two components of a struck body's motion: the height it gains is caused by the percussion (the blow), while the distance it gains is caused by the impetus. He then separates simple impetus (body a along line a b) from simple percussion (body d along line d g, generated by the mover f descending along f d), and defines two kinds of percussion according to whether the struck object flees or the striker rebounds.

Height comes from the blow, distance from the impetus
Incident and reflected motion arise between equal angles. A body driven by the blow gains degrees of height and returns toward its first mover; a body driven by impetus gains degrees of distance from its mover. Thus a greater or lesser blow drives the body higher or lower, and a greater or lesser impetus leaves it at a greater or lesser distance.
Simple impetus versus simple percussion, and two kinds of percussion
The body a moved along a b is moved by simple impetus; the body d moved along d g is moved by simple percussion generated by the mover f descending along f d. A body c reaching the site of percussion d equidistant between the two powers shares in both. Percussion is of two natures: when the struck object flees the striker, and when the striker rebounds backward from it.
