Points, lines and surfaces as 'nothing'; a semicircle's balance

Across this two-folio opening Leonardo pursues a favourite argument: the surface, line and point are 'nothing', because a boundary is no part of its body but only the beginning of the next, so that part equals whole and finite equals infinite. Between these definitions he inserts two mechanical studies: why a percussion is stronger somewhat farther from its mover, and how to find the centre of gravity of a suspended semicircle using a balance (bilancia). A geometric note proves two triangles a m n and a f n equal on a common base. Diagrams include a triangle inscribed in a circle, dome and spike shapes, and a lever device.

The surface, line and point are 'nothing'
That is said to be nothing which partakes of no thing; so the surface, line and point are nothing, for they occupy nothing of their whole. All things that occupy nothing are equal among themselves, whence the part becomes equal to the whole, the divisible to the indivisible, the finite to the infinite.
Why percussion grows stronger farther from its mover
Leonardo asks why a blow is somewhat more powerful when more remote from its mover than when near, answering that a shot acquires degrees of weakness at every degree of motion, while its impetus is increased by the wave of fleeing air. A small figure is marked where 'a pushes inward.'
Centre of gravity of a suspended semicircle
To find the centre of gravity of a half-ball, suspend the semicircle f g b so that line f g is perpendicular, take the third of side b f of triangle f g b at point t, and hang the pendants of the balance; the pole of the balance then marks the centre of gravity. He checks whether t lies a sub-double space this side of n.
Two triangles equal on a common base
The two portions a m n and a f n have their two triangles a m n and a f n equal, because they stand on a common base. The claim accompanies a pair of small figures at the top of folio 130r.
A boundary belongs to neither body
Since no vacuum exists in nature, the boundary of one body is the beginning of the next, so boundaries are part of no body and occupy nothing. Air joined to water shares one boundary, continuous where they are attached yet discontinuous in being of two natures; two contiguous things have a single boundary that is part of neither.
