Reckoning a Labourer's Rate of Moving Earth
A work-rate problem in shovel-throws, barrows and cases of earth carried per hour
A single leaf, seen by transmitted light and given over to a worked problem in reckoning a labourer's output. A man moves earth from a to b over 32 braccia, each shovel-throw a sixth of a braccio thick, stepping forward and back as he throws; Leonardo multiplies out the paces, converts them into 'tempi' (an hour divided into 1080), adds three tempi for each of the 192 throws, and finds the whole takes about two hours and 54/180. He then reduces the 192 shovelfuls to barrows, at six to a barrow, and to cases, at twenty barrows to a case, giving one case and three-fifths, and closes with a rule-of-three for the output per hour. Numerals and fractions crowd the right margin, and writing from the reverse shows through the backlit sheet.

A man carrying earth to and from the embankment
The man a departs from a and comes as far as b, a span of 32 braccia, throwing earth toward the embankment and stepping back a shovel-throw at a time; beyond four braccia from the embankment he can no longer cast earth so that it reaches. The task is to reckon how much earth he shifts, counted in shovelfuls, barrows of six shovelfuls, and cases of twenty barrows.
From shovel-throws to tempi, barrows and cases
Multiplying 32 braccia by 6 throws to the braccio gives 192 sixths, doubled for going and returning to 37056 sixths, found by the rule of progression; divided by 18 sixths per tempo this yields 2058 and 2/3 tempi, to which 576 tempi for the throwing are added, giving 2634 and 2/3 tempi, or about two hours and 54/180. A closing rule-of-three converts one case and 3/5 in that time into the output per hour.
