Under the heading "Of the moved body and its mover," Leonardo classifies the ways a moved body's motion can relate to its mover's: equal along the same line, longer or shorter, directly contrary (east against west), and transverse at right, acute, or obtuse angles, using the compass points to name directions. He notes the resulting angles are infinitely variable and distinguishes simple from compound motion. The lower and right portions carry balance and cord figures and rows of block-and-pulley diagrams that illustrate these motions mechanically.

Seven modes of relative motion between mover and moved
