Percussion gives height, impetus gives distance
A body released midway between the two powers rebounds to a middle place
Continuing the study of why incident and rebounding motions form equal angles, Leonardo separates the two components of a bounce: the height a body gains comes from the blow (percussion), the horizontal distance from the impetus. In the lettered figure the impetus acts along line a b and the percussion along f d (driven by the mover f), so a body c arriving midway between them rises only to a middle place. He adds that percussion has two natures, and that when a struck object equals the striker in weight and shape it takes over the remaining motion while the striker stops. The folio carries an angle diagram and graduated semicircular arcs; the facing folio 89r bears only a faint arc sketch.

Height comes from the blow, distance from the impetus
In each degree of time the body driven by the blow gains height and approaches its mover, while the body driven by impetus gains distance from it. So the height above the point of percussion is caused by the percussion, and the distance from that point by the impetus; a greater blow lifts it higher, a greater impetus carries it farther.

Two natures of percussion; transfer to an equal object
Percussion is of two natures: the object flees from the striker, or the striker rebounds from the object. When the struck object equals the striker in weight and shape, the striker is left in its place while the struck object continues the remainder of the motion.
