The painter's life, colour contrast and a coupled-column design
Painting in landscape, a bird's flight and further squaring-the-circle notes
Headed 'De ludo geometrico', the sheet continues the squaring-the-circle game at the top left while turning most of its written columns to the theory of painting. Leonardo describes the solitary, mathematically trained mind the painter needs, the way a colour looks brightest against a dark ground, and how a hillside darkens toward its summit in landscape. A large pen drawing of a coupled-column aedicule with arched niches dominates the lower sheet, and a short note beside a bird figure sets out how equal wing-beats give straight flight while an unequal beat turns it into a curve.

The solitary, mirror-like mind of the painter
The painter needs the mathematics belonging to painting and a mind free of company alien to such study, changeable according to the objects before it. Above all his mind should be like the surface of a mirror, which transforms into as many colours as its objects; failing like-minded company, he should keep company with himself.
Colours against their contrary grounds
Of colours of equal whiteness, the one on a darker ground shows most bright, and black shows darkest on a whiter ground. Red shows more fiery on a yellower ground, and so with all colours surrounded by their directly contrary colours.
How a hillside darkens toward its summit
When a hill slopes down toward the eye set near mid-height, it darkens along its length. Its plants, half-lit by the sky and half-shaded by the earth, grow lighter toward the roots and darker toward the summit, though that darkness is not proportional to distance.
Coupled-column aedicule with arched niches
A carefully shaded pen study of a wall element with two paired columns carrying an entablature over two arched niches, with a separate profile of a column base drawn at the far left. It is the most finished drawing on the sheet.
Equal wing-beats give straight flight
A bird beating its wings with equal motion and no beat of the tail moves straight ahead. If one wing dips more than the other, the straight motion changes into a curve, and the bird wheels around a low point toward which the lowered wing is directed.
The circular ring and its greatest square
Drawing 16 portions from this circular ring, the remainder is worth the greatest square that can fit within the ring, and a star figure in the right column is worth the four greatest portions.
