The winding of rivers and their straightening into canals
Meanders, floods, confluences and the engineering of channels

A river fed by tributaries cannot stay straight
Leonardo states that it is impossible for a river which receives other rivers into itself to keep to a given straight line. The added inflows force the channel to wander from its intended course.
Floods erase meanders, low water restores them
The bends made by the banks are cancelled during great floods, because the maximum current drives the water straight. As the flow falls it resumes its serpentine course, deflecting from one bank to the other and hollowing the concave shores, while the greater current leaps between opposite concavities.
Straightening a winding river into a canal
If a serpentine river is wholly removed from its old bed and set into a straight canal, the tributaries entering from either side must lengthen on one side as much as they shorten on the other. What gains length loses speed, and that speed passes into the shortened river.
Bring tributaries in at acute angles
He advises making lesser rivers enter their greater rivers at acute angles, so that the greater current bends the inlet and keeps it from striking the far bank. But when a tributary is in flood while the main river is low, its impact breaks the opposite bank.

The greatest arc of a valley's river throws its convexity toward the lowest part of the valley's width. Sinuosities grow the nearer they are to where a lesser river joins the greater, and the ridges of earth thrown up by the banks continually shift, the first reborn as the last is worn away.
