The four kinds of friction and the law that resistance equals a quarter of the weight
This densely written sheet develops Leonardo's law of friction: a clean, flat body dragged over a polished plane resists its mover with a force equal to a quarter of its weight. He distinguishes four kinds of friction according to whether the moving body and the plane are polished or rough, and examines how the resistance changes with the slope of the plane and the position of the mover. The four kinds of friction
The friction of clean, flat bodies resists the mover with a force equal to a quarter of the weight; a is the dragged body, b the mover, c d the polished plane. Friction is of four kinds, according to whether the dragged body and the plane are polished or rough.
Friction and the slope of the plane
Experience shows a polished body dragged over a polished plane resists with a fourth of its weight; moving a rough body on a polished plane equals moving a polished body on a rough one. The friction of polished bodies loses resistance and gains weight as the site becomes less oblique.
Descent on a polished incline
When the polished incline disposes the polished heavy body to weigh in the line of motion by a fourth part of its gravity, then the heavy body is of itself disposed to the motion of descent.
Rolling contact and friction
A heavy body that moves without departing by a revolving motion, its rubbing contact being polished, will always have the force of friction as a fourth part of its weight. Two round objects are shown lying in a similar hollow.
