On Flame: the physics of fire, wind and smoke
The wind that feeds a flame, the annular fire and the horror of vacuum, and why wood smokes
This densely written sheet is Leonardo's treatise 'De fiamma' (On flame). He argues that every flame generates a surrounding wind that feeds and enlarges it, that a flame's heat and its brightness increase together, and that flame length grows with the heat, or shrinks with the cold, of the surrounding air. A ring-in-a-square figure accompanies his theory of annular fire, in which fire consumes the air and would meet a vacuum were the surrounding air not continually rushing in to fill it, down to the sphere of water. Marginal notes treat smoke and moisture, and a figure of joined flames shows the flame stands tallest where the nourishment is greatest.

Every flame breeds a wind that feeds it
Where flame is generated, a surrounding wind is generated whose course serves to nourish and increase the flame; and the motion of that wind is more impetuous the greater the quantity of flame it must feed.
The annular fire and the horror of vacuum
The motion of a uniformly fed flame is circular, forming an empty (annular) circulation; the fire continually consumes the air and would touch a vacuum if succeeding air did not rush in to fill it, a chain of replenishment reaching down to the sphere of water.
Smoke, moisture and the life of the flame
Fuel with less moisture makes less smoke, and darker smoke betrays more moisture. The smoke from which flame is born carries far more heat than the smoke in which it dies, because the first holds the flame's nourishing virtue and the last is its mortal failing.
Heat and splendour of the flame rise together
That flame is of greater heat which is more splendid, and the converse holds; and the flame of greatest splendour is that generated in air of swiftest motion. Leonardo binds a flame's brightness to its heat and to the motion of the air that carries it.
Joined flames rise highest over the most fuel
Of a group of joined flames, the tallest is the one standing over the greater nourishment, and the smallest is the one fed by the least. A figure of united flames of varying height illustrates the rule.
