An instrument to measure the size of the Earth
A sighting board with rings and a compass, set on the shore, triangulating to the earth's centre
Dissatisfied with the many conflicting scholarly opinions on the size of the earth, Leonardo proposes and describes an instrument to measure it. A board eight braccia high carries two sighting rings f g and a plumb-line and is set on a sea-shore to sight the pole star (tramontana); a large compass at its foot is used to take a level on a distant mountain, best marked by a fire at night. From the plumb-lines a triangle is formed, and the ratio of its base to its 'pyramid' gives the number of miles to the earth's centre. The sighting board with rings and a compass
The upper sketch shows the sighting board set on a marine shore, labelled with the compass (bussola) and the directions south (mezzodì, at n) and north (tramontana, at m). Two rings f g in the board allow the observer to sight the pole star, and a large compass at its foot takes a level on a far mountain.
Triangulation from base to 'pyramid' toward the earth's centre
The plumb-lines dropped at two stations form a triangle; as much as the base enters into the pyramid, so much do the measured miles enter toward the earth's centre, as shown in the large arc d c with the earth's surface and centre.
