Spring-driven motor: 'Foundation of the motion'
A tall frame of cords and pulleys powered by a boxed spring, shown again in detail
The sheet is dominated by a large mechanism: a tall frame strung with cords running over pulleys and connected to a boxed drive at its base. The same boxed spring drive is drawn again in detail at the lower left, where its coiled springs are visible. Leonardo's short caption labels the drive as the source of the machine's power.

Spring motor labelled the 'Foundation of the motion'
A tall frame carries cords over pulleys down to a boxed mechanism at its foot, which is shown again enlarged at the lower left with its coiled springs. Leonardo names this boxed drive the 'Foundation of the motion', identifying it as the power source of the machine.
