The water-raising screw compared by pipe-thickness, on a sheet crowded with mechanisms
A densely worked sheet of mechanical sketches — a coiled spring, geared wheels, a rosette-like wheel and assorted rods and linkages — carries a short note comparing simple screws (chiocciole), the helical water-raising kind. Screws equal in pipe-thickness and length move more easily when slenderer, while among screws equal in length and thickness the one with the wider pipe carries less water in proportion, and altogether the screw with the thicker pipe raises less water to a given height. Most of the sheet's drawings and further notes are not included in the transcription.
