Design for a striking water-clock
Cascading hour-vessels open taps in turn, drive an eight-spoke wheel, and trip a hammer to strike a bell.
This crowded sheet works out a water-clock built from rows of small cisterns (bottini). Each vessel fills in one hour, opens a little tap to the next, and so proceeds through 24 hours, using floats, siphons and self-releasing valves described by reference to numbered 'orders'. The water from the hour-vessels is channelled to a single eight-spoke wheel that fills descending buckets held back by an escapement, while on the left a bucket filling under a spout drops half a braccio, raises a hammer and strikes a bell to sound the hour. Squaring calculations for 15 to 18 and other figures are jotted among the mechanisms.

Cascade of hour-vessels opening taps in turn
The vessel a, filling in one hour, opens the little tap b; in the next hour the next does the same, and so on through 24 hours, one vessel per hour, the small vessels opening the large ones.
Floats, siphons and self-releasing valves
By the 'sixth of the fourth', vessel a b pours into vessel f and raises a float, whose sudden release opens tap b with its little valve and at once the vessel that sounds the hours; a siphon empties vessel g by the 'order of the fourth', after which the vessels close again.
Eight-spoke wheel and descending buckets
All the water leaving each hour-vessel runs by one channel to a single wheel of eight spokes, which fills little boxes that descend held back by an escapement so their fall is not sudden.
Bucket, hammer and bell striking the hour
When bucket a fills under spout b to its due weight it parts from the spout and drops half a braccio; the spout closes, the bucket raises a hammer to strike the bell, empties on reaching the ground, is made light and rises again to refill and repeat until the hours are struck.
