Circles and squares, weights in balance, and the deluge of birds
Three mounted strips: geometry of circles and lunes, the balance and its friction, and a prose vision of the flood.
The central strip of this composite sheet carries geometric figures with lettered labels and short proofs comparing circles, curvilinear triangles and the squares inscribed in them. Below and on adjacent panels Leonardo sets out the statics of weights on inclined planes and the balance, defining the 'site of equality' and a rule for the friction of the pivot. The lower block turns to a vivid prose passage describing flocks of birds carried by whirlwinds from distant lands, feeding on bodies borne by the waters of a deluge, and closes with principles on how heavy bodies weigh along their path and toward the centre of the world. The flanking strips show only faint offset residue left by restoration.

Circles, curvilinear triangles and inscribed squares
The largest circle is divided into four equal but dissimilar parts: a and b are two equal circles, while c and d are two curvilinear triangles. Because the diameter of the greater circle is double that of the smaller, the ratio of circle to circle equals the ratio of square to square built on those diameters, so the two pentagonal surfaces are worth the two squares inscribed in the smaller circles.
Weights on inclined planes and the site of equality
The equality of the inclination preserves the equality of the weights: if the proportions of the weights and of the obliquity on which they rest are equal but inverse, the weights remain equal in gravity and in motion. The 'site of equality' is defined as the position in which the plumb-line of the balance's pole stands perpendicular over the straight line of its arms.
Friction of the pivot and the counterweight
Multiply the arm of the counterweight by as many times the friction of the pivot as the number of times it contains within itself the arm of that friction. The arm of the friction is divided into four so as to equalize itself in proportion with the friction of the weight, which is equal to a quarter of the rubbed weight.
Flocks of birds over the waters of the deluge
Whirling winds are said to carry great flocks of birds from distant lands, appearing first as an imperceptible cloud and growing clearer as they near the beholder's eye. The nearest flocks descend obliquely and settle on the dead bodies borne by the flood waters to feed on them, until the swollen corpses lose their buoyancy and sink. The passage then states that every heavy body weighs only along the path of its motion, and that a rolling sphere is weighed down by slow motion and lightened by swift.
