Gear trains, screw-and-nut assemblies, measurements and calculations on blue paper
On blue-tinted paper Leonardo crowds together designs for geared machines: a face-toothed wheel meshing with small toothed 'rackets', a large complete machine with its dimensions in ounces and braccia and a 36-tooth wheel, and several screw-and-nut and pivot assemblies with parts fixed by soldered iron plate and jeweller's glue. He gives working measurements for a vertical wheel driving a twelve-spindle pinion, and reminders to go to Verzé and to Strada Solata to inspect gearing. Turned sideways the sheet also carries a note on the varying darkness of a derivative shadow, and two blocks of arithmetical calculation.

Face-toothed wheels and rackets to be inspected at Verzé
A memorandum to go to Verzé to study wheels toothed on their faces meshing with small face-toothed rackets, and the rule by which they drive one another. A further errand sends him to Strada Solata.
Vertical wheel driving a twelve-spindle pinion
The member n m is one and a half braccia high, one braccio wide and half a braccio thick. The pinion has 12 spindles within a third of a braccio, and the wheel that drives it should have 36 teeth and be one braccio wide.
Ring fixed on a flat iron plate
A flat iron plate is soldered with copper, and a ring of jeweller's glue is made upon it so that the collar is held fast in the middle of the plate. The nut is likewise made square with holes using the same glue.
The darkness of a derivative shadow
A note observing that the derivative shadow in darkness resembles the darkness of that same shadow in the varieties of its obscurity, and that the further the derivative shadow moves from the primitive shadow, the more it differs from it at its boundaries.
