Notes on proportioning gear-teeth to a screw, with the parts of a pump
The sheet studies a geared winch (argano) driven through a screw and toothed wheel, with a written rule that the tooth thickness and the tooth gap must equal the screw's thread, and that the wheel must carry eleven teeth. At upper left a suction pump is drawn and labelled with its parts — barrel, pipe, valve and cylinder — with a detail showing how part a enters the two lower channels. Winch with toothed wheels
A screw drives a toothed wheel in a winch. The rule states that the space of the screw must equal its thickness, the tooth thickness must equal the gap, a tooth must be as thick as the space of a, and the wheel must have eleven teeth.
Suction pump and its parts
The upper-left sketch is a pump labelled with its components: tromba (suction barrel), canna (pipe), animella (clack valve), scanduppo and mortaio (the cylinder). Together they raise water through the barrel.

A separate detail marks part a of the pump and explains that the wood from a enters into the two channels below, showing how the moving member is guided within the body.
Proportioning teeth to the screw thread
The gearing is set out as a proportion between the screw's thread, the tooth thickness and the tooth gap, with the counts 8, 100, 200 and 24-24 written beside the wheel. The result fixes the wheel at eleven teeth.
