Distillation still with labelled water, smoke and charge

Two mounted paper fragments carry studies of distilling apparatus. The upper fragment shows a rounded flask and a bench-mounted vessel; the lower shows a large-bodied still fitted with a tall curved spout, its parts annotated in mirror-script. The notes explain where continually renewed water is to stand, where the smoke enters, and where the substance to be distilled is placed.

A still and its three labelled zones
The lower vessel is a distilling still with a broad body and an arched delivery tube. Its inscriptions mark three functions: a place for water that must be kept continually changing, an inlet for the smoke, and a chamber holding whatever is to be distilled.
