A sand-loading test to measure how much weight an iron wire bears at various lengths
A clearly written page describing an experiment to measure the strength of an iron wire (marked a c n b d in the figure) in various lengths. Leonardo fixes a wire about 2 braccia long, hangs a basket beneath it, and lets a hopper pour fine sand through a small hole until the wire breaks; a little spring shuts the hole at the instant of failure so the exact breaking weight can be read, and the basket falls only half a finger to the ground. He records the load and the place of the break, repeats the test at half and a quarter length, and extends the method to every metal, wood, stone, and rope to derive general rules of strength. The sand-hopper loading apparatus
The test rig, drawn at the upper right, comprises a fixed horizontal support from which the wire hangs, a basket suspended below to receive minute sand poured through a small hole from a hopper, and a little spring that closes the hole the moment the wire fails.
