Rods loaded with numbered weights: balance studies
A series of horizontal rods with tick-marks and numeric loads, worked out in pen and red chalk
The sheet is filled with a sequence of horizontal rods, drawn in pen and red chalk and marked off with tick divisions, each hung with numbered weights (4-4, 3, 6, 8-7, and so on). They are balance and lever exercises in which loads are placed at graduated distances along a beam. A short fractional computation ('2 2/3, 8/3') at the foot works out one of the resulting values, and no continuous prose accompanies the figures.

Rods hung with graduated numbered weights
Across the upper and right portions of the sheet, horizontal rods are divided by tick-marks and loaded at their ends and along their length with numbered weights such as 4-4, 3, 6, and 8-7. Each is a balance or lever study relating load to position along the beam.
Fractional value at the foot of the sheet
Below the figures a small arithmetical note reduces a value to thirds, giving 2 2/3 and 8/3. It records the numerical outcome of one of the weighted-rod problems drawn above.
