A very large toothed wheel set in a triangular frame around a vertical shaft dominates the sheet, surrounded by smaller mechanical studies. Notes describe a cylinder whose square-mouthed, oblong socket lets two springs on the handle catch, a pulley arrangement (labelled a, b, d, e) for raising a load, and cylinders around which cloth is wound onto beams (subbi) and drawn under the teasel. Square-mouthed socket for the spring catch
A cylinder is bored with a hole labelled a that is square at the mouth but oblong in height within. This shape lets the shoulders of the two springs fixed to the handle catch and hold.
Raising pulley d when e drops below b
A system of pulleys at the left is lettered d, e, b, n, a. The note instructs that whenever e falls lower than b, the pin of pulley d should be raised, keeping the hoist in balance.
Winding the cloth onto the beams
Two cylinders wrap cloth around beams marked m, a, n, b. The instruction fastens the head of the cloth (p) to beam n, passes it under the teasel, then pins it with shearmen's hooks and turns the upper beam so the cloth stays taut.
Teeth that do not fit here
The great toothed wheel carries a short note that these notches, or teeth, do not go here, alongside a string of numbers. The remark records a correction to the tooth layout of the gear.
