How a Bird Rights Itself Against the Wind
Drawing in one wing and extending the other to return to a position of equilibrium

Righting after a gust strikes from below
When the wind strikes the bird below its course, the bird turns its back to the wind; if the wind is stronger from below than above, it would flip upside down unless it quickly draws in the lower wing and extends the upper one. In this way it rights itself and returns to equilibrium.
Proportion of wind force on the two wings (a b, a c)
The drawn-in wing is a c and the extended wing a b. Leonardo argues the wind's powers on the two wings hold the same proportion as their extensions, a b to a c. Though c is wider than b, it lies so near the bird's centre of gravity that it resists little by comparison.
Recovery from a gust under one wing
When the wind strikes to leeward beneath one wing, it could overturn the bird unless, having turned its breast to the wind, it lowers the opposite wing toward the earth and draws in the wing first struck. That wing stays uppermost and the bird returns to the position of equilibrium.
Rules of the "third book" applied to wing length (n, m, f)
Leonardo cites propositions of an earlier third book: the object fought by a greater power is more overcome; a support resists less the farther it sits from its fixed point; and among equal winds the one of greater bodily quantity is stronger. Since m f is longer than m n, m f yields to the wind.
