Rowing the Wing Down and Back; the Gliding Wing Edge-On
The wing-rotation linkage, keeping the wing edgewise during the glide, and a fall-breaking bag
The main passage explains the wing-rotation mechanism of the flying machine, sketched at the top of the sheet with lettered parts (c d, a b, stirrup g, lever f). The wings must row down and backward to hold the machine up and drive it forward, the lever c d moving along an oblique path guided by the strap a b. Leonardo insists the lever f must move before the stirrup g, so that during the coasting glide the wing can be set edge-on and not strike the air and impede the bird. A short note warns to strike the ground with the double bag if one falls from it, and a red-chalk leafy sprig is drawn below the text.

The wings must row downward and backward to support the machine and drive it forward, the lever c d moving along an oblique path guided by the strap a b. Leonardo weighs letting the foot on stirrup g also pull lever f down, but rejects it: lever f must rise or fall before g moves.
Setting the wing edge-on during the glide
While the already-gained impetus carries the bird forward without flapping, the wing must be set edgewise into the air as it is thrown forward and lifted. Otherwise the flat face of the wings would strike the air, impede the motion, and stop the impetus from carrying the bird forward.
Warning about the double safety bag
A brief note above the mechanism warns that if you fall off the double bag held under your seat, you should make sure you strike the ground with it. It continues the safety-device thinking of the previous sheet.
Red-chalk leafy sprig
A small branch bearing leaves is drawn in red chalk below the writing. It is one of the natural-form sketches scattered through the codex.
