The page studies human-powered water-lifting: a man treading a stepped wheel that raises a large container (Fig. 15), with a small crossed-out figure of a man before a pair of piston pumps beneath it; a man on a stepped wheel driving a hydraulic wheel with large scoops (Fig. 16); a ditch and its ditch-emptier (Fig. 17); and two wheels that raise and lower a weight to compress the water in a pump (Fig. 18). The captions record only the working substance while the figures show the mechanisms.
