Ditch-Emptiers with Rectilinear and Circular Traction
Figures 26-27: large bailing scoops hauled up inclined rails to drain water
Two large machines for emptying ditches are numbered 26 and 27 and captioned only by title. Figure 26 is a ditch-emptier worked by rectilinear (straight-pull) traction, its scoop drawn as an open box hauled up parallel rails; figure 27 is the same task worked by circular traction, the scoop lifted by a wheel and pulley. The single transcribed word 'd'acqua' (of water) marks what the first device raises. Faint show-through of writing appears at the foot of the leaf.

Ditch-emptier with rectilinear traction (fig. 26)
The upper machine is captioned as a ditch-emptier driven by straight-line pull. Its scoop, an open box, rides up a pair of inclined rails, and the note 'of water' identifies the load it lifts out.
Ditch-emptier with circular traction (fig. 27)
The lower machine is titled a ditch-emptier worked by circular traction. A rounded scoop is hauled up an incline by a wheel-and-pulley drive at the right, converting rotary motion into the lift.
