On motion: testing a model trebuchet
Comparing throw distances and varying the counterweight
Headed "On motion" and written in red chalk, the note proposes an experiment with a model of the trabocco (trebuchet), which, unlike the crossbow, does not tire. With one and the same counterweight Leonardo would observe how far it throws various loads, and then, for a single thrown load, vary the counterweight of the machine.

The trebuchet as a test engine
The siege engine chosen for the trials is the trabocco (trebuchet), set against the balestra (crossbow): the trebuchet is said not to tire as the crossbow does, which makes it fit for repeated throws.
