A note on relative density above a large drawn mechanism of toothed wheel and lantern pinion

Water occupies ten times the volume of lead
For equal weights in vessels of the same shape, a pound of lead fills a vessel ten times smaller than a pound of water. Put the other way, the bulk of the water is tenfold that of the lead. A small two-square figure labelled 10 fixes the ratio.
Toothed wheel driving a lantern pinion on a drum
A large spoked toothed wheel meshes with a lantern (spindle) pinion mounted on a horizontal drum shaft carried between two uprights. A weight hangs from the assembly. The gearing converts between the drum's rotation and the driving wheel.
