Testing the friction of a dragged load
On the flat the ground bears all; up a steep slope the cord does, and the rubbing fades

Leonardo insists one must test the force needed rather than assume it, since different slopes give different friction: on flat ground the whole weight rests on the earth and none on the pulling cord, so difficulty is at its first and greatest power; on a steep incline the weight the load lends to the cord is subtracted from its friction. As the clearest proof he notes that hauling a load straight up along a wall puts almost all its weight on the cord and leaves little pressing the wall where it rubs.

Test the friction; do not assume it
You must make trial and assay what force moves a weight along a level road — that is, the nature of its friction. Not knowing it, one instead proposes a difficulty at will and varies it by the obliquity of the road, for different obliquities make different labours at the contact.
Slope shifts the weight from the ground to the cord
On flat ground the load is in the first power of difficulty, resting wholly on the earth and nothing on the cord. Pull it up a steep road and the weight it lends to the cord is subtracted from its friction; hauled straight up a wall, it is almost all on the cord and little remains rubbing the wall.
