Two tested horizontal rods and the rule for a loaded cord
Weighted rods marked 'tested', and how the counterweight of a stretched cord doubles without end
Two graduated horizontal rods hang weights, the first bearing the figures 4 2 6 and the second 2 1 2 1 6, each marked 'tested'. A rule follows for a cord loaded at its middle: multiply the 4 pounds at m by the number of times o m enters into a s, giving 32 pounds, that is 16 on each side, to hold up the central 4. Raising the cord straighter doubles the required counterweight again and again, to 64, then 128, and so on to infinity, until the cord would break if forced fully straight.

Raise it as much again and the counterweight doubles to 64, then to 128, and so on to infinity, until the cord would break if straightened out simple and alone.
