Wooden gate of a canal lock
The lock gate is shown in perspective, a plank gate with diagonal bracing and iron fittings set between piers to hold or release the water of the canal. The channel widens toward the foreground. The labels “sasso – sasso” identify the stone on each side.
Masonry abutment
A coursed masonry pier or abutment rises at the right of the gate, built up in blocks to carry the lock structure. It anchors the movable gate to the bank of the waterway.
