A red-chalk elevation of a canal lock enclosed under a gabled housing, its walls drawn as parallel horizontal courses. Lock housing with parallel walls
The lock is shown front-on beneath a triangular gabled top, its masonry rendered as a series of parallel horizontal lines. The accompanying note calls out these parallels and states that a sluice-gate is set to one side of the structure.
Central gate-lifting mechanism
A vertical rod runs down the centre of the housing to a horizontal shaft carrying a paddle or gear at the base, the apparatus for operating the sluice-gate. The mechanism is boxed within the lower part of the elevation.
