Measuring an arrow's passage through air, water and solids; testing a shooting machine
This densely written opening, in Leonardo's mirror script, sets out an experimental programme for projectile motion. He proposes measuring how far one and the same arrow, shot with equal force, travels through different airs (foggy, rainy, clear, of the mountain and of the valley) and how far it drives into different muds, earths, stones, woods and fibrous materials, taking the length of penetration as a measure of the medium's density. He states that among equal powers the longest driving path throws farthest, and relates a crossbow's power to the diminishing angle of its drawn cord. A second passage, 'To know how far a machine should shoot its weight,' prescribes trials of cord and arm thickness, arrow weights and materials, and fletching shapes, to derive a general rule that scales with the size of the crossbow.

Measuring a medium's density by an arrow's passage
Leonardo directs measuring the motion an arrow makes through the air, then shooting the same arrow through water, and testing it first through foggy, rainy and clear airs, and into different muds, earths, stones and woods. The length of the passage or penetration is taken as proportional to the density of the material passed through.
Crossbow power and the angle of the drawn cord
He states that the power of the mover who draws the crossbow cord increases as the angle created at the middle of that cord diminishes, and that the motion of the shot corresponds to the angle of the cord, the force that drew it, the weight of the missile and the quality of the air through which it passes.
How to test a shooting machine and derive a general rule
To know how far a machine should throw its weight, try different weights and shapes of missile, different thicknesses of cord and of the crossbow's arms, and different arrow weights, woods, irons and fletchings, double, single or trebled, straight or twisted. Once the best is found, make it a general rule and scale it proportionally as the crossbow is enlarged.
