A spinning machine for eighteen women: wheels and gearing
Counterweighting the spindle-frame; gear ratios giving 864 spindle turns per turn of the handle
A large, finely drawn multiple-spindle spinning machine fills the sheet, with concentric wheels, a worm gear and rising spindles keyed by many letters (Y, e, c, f, n, r, a, h, m, o and others). Leonardo works out its gearing arithmetically: one turn of the handle Y drives the wheels n f four turns and the spindle 864 turns, so the spindle makes 27 turns for each turn of the collector (864 divided by 32). A counterweight g of about a pound lightens the spindle-frame so the axle scarcely feels its load, and a smaller four-woman version is scaled down. The apparatus is presented as a way of spinning for eighteen women at once, giving one braccio to each.

Spinning for eighteen women at one handle
Turning the handle Y drives the reel e and an endless screw on the head of wheel a; the wheel e turns the two wheels f n through the reel c, f gathering the thread onto the middle of wheel r while n twists it. The worm turns wheel a (16 teeth on its edge, 8 on its face), and eight turns of the screw fill the spindle top to bottom. This all works because the axle h gathers the thread t b and raises the beam b S, which at p lifts the wheel m on which every spindle rests.
A counterweight to lighten the spindle-frame
The counterweight g balances the wheel m and the wood b S between them. Set about a pound lighter than the two together, it leaves the axle b feeling barely one pound of load when it raises the wheel m and the beam b S.
Gear ratios and turn counts of the wheels
Leonardo tabulates wheel diameters and tooth counts: wheel e is 2 braccia with 32 teeth, reel c is half a braccio with 8 spindles, wheel a is half-toothed with 8 teeth. One whole turn of the handle Y gives the wheels n f four turns, the wheel r thirty-two, and the spindle 864 — so the spindle makes 27 whole turns per turn of the collector, found by dividing 864 by 32, and every ounce of rise winds the thread 85 and one-third times.
Proportioning diameters stands for circumferences
If you set the diameters of the wheels in proportion together, the result is the same as if you had set their circumferences in proportion. A separate reckoning gives the spindle o 624 turns to the collector r's 594.
A smaller version for four women
To build the instrument small, for four women, the wheel f n is made one braccio in diameter, the reel c a quarter of a braccio, and the wheel e one braccio.
