Cranks on a shared bar: the problem of full rotation
Six positions of the connecting-iron, and a question on the shapes of flame and water-drop
This leaf studies cranks (manichi) joined by a common connecting-bar, the 'sensale', asking when turning one crank will carry the others through a complete revolution. The six circles trace the path of a crank about its fixing, and Leonardo concludes that handle m cannot drive the upper handle n without the aid of a and b, that only turning the middle crank makes all give a full turn, and that the arrangement a n avoids the earlier defects because it need not turn fully. At the head of the page a 'Question' asks why flame draws itself to a pyramid as it rises while a falling water-drop rounds itself, and a small bell-and-hammer sketch appears at the foot.

Turning cranks on the common bar (m, n, a, b, S)
The lower crank, going toward the left, declines while the upper would rise, but the length of the connecting-bar forbids it, so it returns. If crank S is the prime mover it will not carry the upper crank through a full turn, because it does not pass the perpendicular line of the poles' centres; and it jams hard when that line coincides with the central line through the bar.
Why handle m cannot turn handle n without a b
It is impossible, with the handle m, to turn the upper handle n without the help of a b. The circles seen at head and foot show the path traced by the crank as it turns about its fixing, and the 6 lines show 6 positions of the iron passing from one handle to the other.
Question: the pyramidal flame and the round water-drop
A heading of 'Questions' asks why the flame, running to its place, makes itself pyramidal, while water rounds itself in descent — that is, at the extremity of the drop. It poses the contrast between the forms taken by rising fire and falling water.
A crank free of the earlier defects (a n)
In this arrangement none of the defects noted above occurs, because the handle a n is not required to give a full turn, as m S is. The design sidesteps the jamming that afflicts cranks made to rotate completely on the shared bar.
