Bending a Composite Beam by Screw; Launching a Rocket
A screw press to shape reinforced timber and a mortar to shoot a rocket over three miles
The upper drawing is a heavy timber frame fitted with pulleys and internal screws; Leonardo explains that a 'reinforced' (laminated) piece of wood should first be bent with the screw and then have its pieces put inside. Small labelled figures give the numbers 20, 21, 21, 20 and the letters m, n. At the lower right he sets out a way to shoot a rocket to a great height: an upright 'passavolante' holds a ball with chain and rocket attached, ignited through a priming charge so that the rocket is carried more than three miles, trailing over half a mile of flame behind it.

A reinforced timber is to be made by first bending it with the screw, in the manner shown, and then inserting its pieces. The accompanying figures carry the numbers 20 21 21 20 and the letters m and n.
Shooting a rocket to a great height
An upright passavolante is loaded with a ball to which a chain and a rocket are joined, the rocket left projecting outside. A little priming board carries powder level with the touch-hole; when the rocket is fired the flame drops onto it and ignites the charge, so the rocket is thrown by the ball more than three miles, with over half a mile of flame trailing behind.
