Plan for a Treatise on the Screw and its Lever
Leonardo outlines a book on screws, wheels, levers, pulleys and raising great weights
This full page of text is Leonardo's programme for a treatise on the screw. He proposes to demonstrate its nature and that of its lever, that it works better pulling than pushing and better single and slender than double and thick, and to survey endless screws, their 'mothers' (nuts), how they pair with toothed wheels, retrograde and double-acting screws, and screws that make their nut race round. He promises to treat levers, supports and their durability, the wheel of continuous force against the straight lever of variable force, the ratchet wheel, ropes, pulleys, windlasses and rollers. He closes with schemes for driving air under water to raise the greatest weights, using wind-filled bags and sand-filled boats tied to submerged loads.

The nature and varieties of the screw
The screw ought rather to be used in pulling than in pushing, and exerts more force single than double and slender than thick, for equal lever and force. Leonardo will survey endless screws, their 'mothers' (nuts), how they pair with toothed wheels, retrograde and double-acting screws, and screws that by a single turn make the nut race through many turns.
Continuous-force wheel versus variable-force lever
He will treat the levers by themselves and the strength and durability of their supports, and the difference between the lever of continuous force in operation, namely the wheel, and the lever of variable power, namely the straight one, explaining why the one is better and the other more brief and convenient.
Raising the greatest weights from under water
The plan ends with driving air under water to draw out the very greatest weights: filling bags with wind after they are tied under water together with weights, and filling boats with sand, tying weights to such submerged boats, and then emptying the boats of their sand.
