Cones driven under a wheel's teeth to turn it, beside a large geared wheel and escapement.
On f. 93r a crown-like disk at the lower left is ringed with radiating cones, illustrating Leonardo's note that the elements a n are cones which enter beneath the teeth of a wheel and lift them by force, so turning the wheel around. At the centre a large toothed wheel is engaged by a pawl-like arm with a small weight hanging beside it, while a wedge-and-screw device and a smaller mechanism appear to either side. Leonardo explains that a n are cones which enter beneath the teeth of the wheel and raise them by force, thereby turning it around. The crown-like disk ringed with radiating cones at the lower left illustrates the device.
