Crossbow release and the lever of a screw
An easy crossbow release, plus a study of the lever and counter-lever of a screw thread.
On f. 94r Leonardo describes an easy crossbow release worked at f: pulling it down moves the members so that the nut is freed and the bolt shoots, after which the cord K draws the parts back to lock anew, with the tooth f folding into the stock. A second, similar lock below is released with the ordinary crossbow key and fitted with a spring M to absorb the blow. The lower half turns to the screw: he measures the lever and counter-lever of a thread (c d the core, a c d f its width, b e its centre) and gives rules for comparing the power of lever h f against counter-lever f m, noting that only the friction-drag of the weight is counted.

Easy crossbow release freeing the nut
Pulling the member f downward drives n and m forward while h returns back; g rises and r drops, freeing the nut so the bolt is shot. The cord K is then pulled to draw back the nose g, striking on the nose h so the lock catches anew, the tooth f folding into the stock.
Alternative lock with cushioning spring M
The lower lock is similar to the one above but is released with the ordinary key of crossbows. A spring M is added so that the blow made by the member n does not break n itself.
Lever and counter-lever of a screw thread
The core of the screw is c d and the width of its thread a c d f, its centre b e being the point to take as the limit of the counter-lever. To weigh the power of the lever against the counter-lever, let the lever be h f and the counter-lever f m, then calculate by rule and consult the figures at the left.
Friction-drag in reckoning the screw's force
In the counter-lever one counts only the dragging of the weight carried by friction, and a further potential counter-lever lying in the motion gained in one whole turn of the screw. The lever proper is reckoned only where the centre of the hand, or the force moving the bar, lies.
