Headed 'Way to bore a mountain,' this page teaches how to drive a tunnel from both sides of a mountain so that the two bores meet on one line. Leonardo dismisses the tedious method of levelling with poles alone and presents a levelling instrument — drawn large at the page's centre, with a graduated arc, a vertical staff, a plumb-bob and a fixing screw. He describes planting poles h, r and t along the sighting line to fix the perpendicular alignments of the mouths, then using the instrument and two lamps (kept as lanterns so their flame does not sink) to set both mouths on the level line b c, working at night by candle so the marks strike one into another.

Boring a mountain so the two tunnels meet on one line
To bore a mountain from each side and have the bores meet on one line, first take the alignments of the meeting-points, then the heights of the mouths. Standing on the middle of the mountain he plants a pole where he stands and another between it and the fire-marked mouth, calling the first pole h, and repeats on the far side toward the mouth at f.

The level is planted and straightened with its plumb-bob, then raised and lowered until the centre of one lamp lies on the level line b c, and fixed with its screw. Turning to the second lamp, the surveyor signals its keeper to raise or lower a hand-lamp until both centres sit on the upper line b c.

For each mouth two poles are set twenty braccia apart, each carrying a light on the upper line of the level b c — four lamps in all — and marked to match the lamps. In digging, one always watches the two or three poles strike one into another at the centre in front of the tunnel mouth, working at night with candles.
