On the Percussion of Dense Bodies
Impact theory illustrated by hammers, nails, a knife cutting a peach, and colliding balls
Leonardo opens a discourse 'On the percussion of dense bodies,' distinguishing an indivisible blow created only at the surface where bodies touch from a divisible force that penetrates a body and weakens as it divides among ever more parts. He argues the point with a hammer driving two nails of different size, a nail waxed point-first to the hammer face, a knife slicing a peach in mid-air without dulling, and a ball that takes on a striker's motion while the striker stops. A column of small pen sketches at the right shows hammers, nails and a striking device labelled 'united' and 'disunited patient' with the first and last degrees of penetrating power, and a wheeled plank is drawn at the foot; several of the small sketches carry further short captions not included in the transcription.

Indivisible blow versus divisible penetrating force
Percussion is called indivisible when it is made only at the surface where bodies touch, but divisible once the power penetrates and distinguishes itself through all the parts of the receiving body. The farther it travels from its origin the more it diminishes, dividing into ever smaller parts, so that longer and thicker bodies transmit less harm to whatever supports them.
Nail, knife and colliding ball as proofs of impact
Struck by the same hammer, the smaller of two nails fixes itself far deeper, and a nail waxed point-first to the hammer face penetrates marvelously. A knife severs a peach in the air, flesh and stone alike, without spoiling its edge; and a struck ball takes on the striker's motion while the striker stays put, like a leaper on a board that flees backward so he falls back where he rose.
United and disunited 'patient': degrees of penetration
Small diagrams of hammers and nails are labelled to contrast a 'united patient' and a 'disunited patient,' each of one pound in weight. One is marked the last degree of power, weakest in penetration; the other the first degree of power, greatest in penetration.
