Clock Mechanisms and the Air-Braked 'Tempo' Regulator
A single-wheel striking clock, and a geometric rule for setting the escapement's teeth
The folio is devoted to clock mechanisms and time regulation. Leonardo debates whether an escapement's transverse arm resists the air better round or straight — concluding a round one only seems equal because a supporting crosspiece adds weight — and sketches a single large toothed wheel with a heavy counterweight that, with air-braked vanes set far from the axle, could alone show and, with a second wheel, strike the hours. He then treats the 'tempo,' an escapement-like regulator that holds the wheels' motion in time and lengthens the hours, and gives a precise geometric rule for setting its two opposed teeth on a thread-hung rod so their center-lines meet the rod's axis at a right angle, with an odd number of teeth. Pen sketches show the weighted balance-beam, the toothed wheel with counterweight, a gear train, and the toothed escapement detail.

Round versus straight escapement arm and air resistance
Some hold that making the escapement's transverse arm circular gives it the same contact with, and resistance to, the air as a straight one. Leonardo counters that it only seems so because rounding it adds a crosspiece to support the circle, and this added weight is what makes it appear equal to the straight arm.
A single-wheel clock to show and strike the hours
With one wheel alone a simple, good clock can be made to show the hours, provided it has many teeth and considerable size, its vanes set far from the pole, a small barrel to wind the counterweight cord, and a very heavy counterweight. When the air thickens it draws the vanes toward the center of the rod, or one increases the counterweight; a second like wheel could then strike the hours.
The 'tempo': a regulator that lengthens the hours
Against the impetus of the counterweights that drive clock wheels, some use instruments called 'tempo' that keep the wheels' motion in time and slow it to the length of the hours. This office of prolonging the time is most useful; it is made in several ways, all of one nature and value, the variety born of the place where each must be fitted.
Rule for setting the two opposed teeth of the 'tempo'
Divide the span between the tooth-centers into three equal widths: upper tooth, the rod's thickness, and the opposite tooth. The two center-lines of the teeth must meet the rod's axis at a right angle (a smaller angle gives a wider swing); the toothed rod hangs from a thread, the teeth number odd, and the rod's central line passes over the center of the toothed wheel.
