Two ideas share the sheet. A mechanism is described in which a handle, turned or swung now one way and now the other, always drives a wheel in a single direction, drawn as a framed toothed wheel with a crank and a rocking linkage. Above it a hull floats on a waterline, lettered a, m, n, illustrating the principle that a floating ship displaces exactly its own weight of water. A fixed point in the drive is labelled 'immovable pivot.'
