Reversing gear-train and the balance of a loaded screw
Wheels of 32 teeth that reverse the turning, and why a screw's load must sit beneath the center of force
The upper right shows a gear assembly in which turning the wheel q of 32 teeth drives two further wheels b and p, each with 32 teeth on rim and face, so that engaging one set or the other reverses the direction of turning; the pinions m n turn on their poles and carry the motion back. A long left-hand column treats the mechanics of a screw carrying a weight: the load must be hung so its center falls beneath the center of the force (the center of power above the center of resistance), or the screw binds in its nut and moves with difficulty. Leonardo invokes the principle that every center of gravity seeks to rest beneath the center of its support, illustrating the case with labelled poles b, a, c, m and r, s. The left margin also carries screw-jacks with weights hung from them.

Gear-train of 32-tooth wheels that reverses its turning
Turning the wheel q of 32 teeth turns the two wheels b and p, each with 32 teeth on its rim and 32 on the face of the half-wheel. When the upper teeth engage q the wheels turn left; when the lower teeth reach q the same wheels turn right, while the pinions m n turn on their poles and carry the motion back.
Loading a screw so its weight sits beneath the center of force
The weight given to a screw must be attached so it loads evenly, with the center of the weight beneath the center of the force (the center of power above the center of resistance). By the principle that every center of gravity seeks to lie beneath the center of its support, a weight hung at c would wish to be at m.
A screw loaded off its center turns with difficulty
If the center of the screw lies outside the center of its weight, above the middle of the nut the screw presses toward the load and below it presses the opposite way, so the motion becomes very laborious. The same difficulty is shown at the pole r S, which lies outside the center of the nut.
