Compound wheel-and-pinion machines for raising weights
The upper diagram shows a long horizontal axle carried in a slotted frame, its shaft ending in a pair of large toothed wheels turned by a T-shaped crank, with cups along the shaft and weights hung from cords on tripod supports at either end. The lower diagram shows a great spoked wheel carrying an internal train of small pinions and coupled to a long screw-shaft that runs up an inclined block, forming a compound hoisting machine. Both are studies of gear-and-pinion trains that convert a hand crank into a slow, powerful lifting motion.
