A single tooth strikes harder than two
A wheel raising a weight with one tooth on its axle delivers a greater blow than one with two teeth. The reason is the momentum the wheel gathers while turning empty, before it meets the weight and lifts it with great force. This is a study of impact and stored motion.

The mould sits at a and the medal at b; the die d is driven by a wooden mallet, and die f is struck to open the piece. A strong spring at h throws back the wedges c and e so the medal releases of itself. The wedge c is broad below and narrow above so it will not lift on the opposite side.
